The "Sue Us" Petition

Petition text

To John Coleman, James Inhofe, Owen McShane, Christopher Monckton, Anthony Watts, and others who actively promote doubt on the reality of global warming, its seriousness, or the need for mitigation thereof:

We, the undersigned, hereby call upon all global warming doubters

  1. to bring lawsuits against Al Gore and James Hansen, to charge them for conspiracy, as has been promised on numerous occasions, and to do so as soon as possible — so that the question of whether Gore and Hansen are ‘co-conspirators’ in a global warming ‘scam’ can be definitively resolved at the soonest opportunity;
  2. to bring on the lawsuits in person;
  3. to clarify which of the numerous incompatible conspiracy theories which have been proposed hitherto will serve as the basis for said lawsuits; or if none of the existing theories are applicable, to explain why they were originally proposed;
  4. to acknowledge that all requests to Gore or Hansen to participate in ‘debates’ on global warming can and should be rightfully ignored — as such debates are invariably pointless and inconsequential, and will only serve to distract from the truly important debates to take place in the courts of law and the chambers of parliament worldwide;
  5. to cease and desist from all extralegal efforts, such as polls and petitions, to remove Hansen from his position as the Head of the US NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, until such a time when the courts of law have ruled him to be guilty of the crime of conspiracy.

Please sign this petition!

To sign, please post a comment below giving

  1. your name and/or alias;
  2. sufficient contact information to identify you — a snail mail address of your home, and/or your organizational affiliation, and/or your telephone number and country, etc. (signatures without sufficient accompanying contact information will be handled at a lower priority and may be reformatted);
  3. optionally, your home page address, your e-mail address, and/or a personal statement.

Thank you!

Update 2008-08-02: If you wrote something below that’s not a signature, and you can’t find it, then I may have moved it to the discussion post. (This is just to make it easier to count signatures. ☺)

Update 2008-08-03: Michael Tobis is concerned that “saying ‘so sue me’ on behalf of someone else” may not be a good idea. I’d therefore like to clarify that I’ve created and signed this petition on behalf of nobody but myself (so yes, the wording of the title may not be the most suitable). And I urge signers not to misconstrue this petition as a statement “on behalf of” Gore and/or Hansen, or as being officially sanctioned by them.

Update 2008-08-11: Corrected a typo in Clause 4: “take places” should be “take place”.

Update 2008-08-24: Added a link to my genealogy of climate conspiracy theories in the petition text.

Thanks to the following bloggers and forum goons for pinging back here (pingbacks are moved from the comments space below, to make it easier to count signatures):

(Once more: To sign the petition, please post a comment below.)

  29. Or better yet, sue the denialists. Which is sort of like the existing federal suit of Kivalina v. Exxon… an Indian village push off their village by sea level rise.

    Keep an eye on this court case

    The Kivalina suit charges fossil fuel companies with civil conspiracy “intended to suppress the knowledge of the link between greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, thereby furthering the defendants’ abilities to contribute to global warming.” And they are asking for damages from un-named co-conspirators – that could be PR agencies, think-tanks or media outlets — any media with a big coal/oil relationship – possibly even those who made and delivered advertising.

    [I hope you’re not saying that Christopher Monckton is a “scientific professional”? Or that global warming is nothing but an invention one “politician”? Anyway, it looks more and more like Coleman and Monckton aren’t going to sue after all… —frankbi]

  70. Im an independant IT contractor working in the UK. A couple of years ago I landed a contract where I met a guy (another contrctor) who would actually shoot small specks of spitle from his mouth when ranting about global warming issues. I soon learned he was a GW denier and to be honest until I met him I’d never even considered that deniers/skeptics even existed. I though the issue it was a done deal.

    Anyway, his saturating and constant ranting about the issue prompted me to do some research. In part to give myself some amuniation next time he wanted to have a rant, partly becuase I couldnt quite believe there were still people who had the balls to so fiercely doubt the current evidence, and partly I must admit to see if there was infact anything to it. I tried to keep an open mind.

    After reading many articles and following several blogs I soon came to the conclusion that on balance the denier ‘type’ (sorry to stereotype, but its usefull to generalize sometimes) came across most often as a typical conspiracy nut. The problem with debate on the internet is there is so much of it and its mostly uncontrolled, unorded and full of emotive language. This on balance (in my opinion often) came mostly from the denier camp. The arguments go round and round, denier points that are answered with reasonably consise counter arguments with links to the science and published journals are on the whole ignored or answered with another unrelated argument, with the first point to be brought up days/weeks later, again and again.

    After a while I concluded that “most” (or a lot anyway) of deniers whos arguments I followed would not/could not ever change their mind on the subject, no matter what evidance they were shown. Thats why the word Denier is such a good one in this case. It remindes me of smokers. I know many people who still smoke and when asked if they are aware its bad for them and that they could actually die early from doing it, they say yes they do. I think though that deep down thay are in denial, ‘it wont happen to me’ kind of thing. Often I feel I can tell what thier politics on other subjects will be even before they talk. Its often very predictable.

    Sometimes (actually often) when following an GW deinal argument I can detect a real sense of anger brimming under the surface, but not about the GW argument as such, but of a hatred of the type of person who would agree with man made GW (though having written it down like that I see that the phrase “agreeing with man made GW” is a mute point. Man Made GW just IS. “thinking” people who seek the truth, who feel that getting to the truth about a thing is what is most important and have the strength to ignore their own personal/natural deep down biases can see there really is no argument anymore. Its not about believing in GW anymore, it’s just an unfortunate fact of life. courage is about acting in spite of yourself)

    act dont act
    GW Exists life goes on Global scale catastrophy
    GW doesnt Exist worst case world economy suffers stuff carries on as normal

    Whats the worst case scenario above

    Al Gore SHOULD be sued just for beng Al Gore.
    He should be sued for taking credit and money (Nobel prize money)
    for the labor and sacrifice of thousands of nameless others
    under constant ridicule and being shut-out of the halls of Congress
    during their fight on behelf of the environment and climate issues.

    He should be sued for authorizing the EPA in 1999 to torture and poison
    millions of animals in the unnecessary LD50 tests.

    Above all, Gore – and ALL Demorepublicrats and all those who vote for them –
    deserve to be sued, tortured, and imprisoned for taking the Nobel Peace prize
    that rightfully belongs to Ralph Nader – a REAL American hero –
    as well as for his conservative rightwing terrorist bullying tactics against Ralph Nader, Greens, Libertarians, and Socialists for ALL political offices – NOT just for US President –
    each year, every election.

    Anyway, THANK you for posting this website and giving me new information.
