Waah, they won't debate us II

The freedom-loving Heartland Institute is outraged — outraged, I say! — over an e-mail from climate scientist James Hansen which was sent three months ago:

James Hansen, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) staffer who has called for global warming skeptics to be tried for “crimes against humanity and nature,” has tersely declined an invitation to defend his extremist global warming views in a College of William and Mary debate. […]

Braum Katz […] had invited […] Dr. Patrick Michaels to present his case for saying global warming is not an impending crisis. Michaels accepted […]

When Katz extended a similar invitation to Hansen, expressing a desire for students to hear differing points of view, Hansen responded with a terse, two-word email reply; “not interested.”

According to Marlo Lewis, CEI senior fellow, this means

“One has to wonder if the staff of the publicly funded Goddard Institute [which Hansen heads] really is free to engage in open-minded science, and whether Hansen is stacking the deck with the staff that he supervises.”

Yeah, I think I get it: the tone of this whole global warming ‘dispute’ could’ve been very different if Hansen had accepted Katz’s invitation to appear in town hall meetings.

(The “global warming debate flowchart” has now been updated, in the light of various recent developments.)
