An e-mail to Roy Green

Announcement: Sign the “Sue Us” Petition and urge Monckton and others
to sue Gore and Hansen as repeatedly threatened! 55 signatures so far!

An e-mail I sent (with mistakes and all) to Roy Green, in response to his hosting of the debate on global warming between climate activist Littlemore and inactivist Monckton, and his remarks yesterday on the debate:

To: Roy.Green@corusent.com

Subject: Feedback on your show from an “Al Gore supporter”

Dear Mr. Roy Green,

I am an international listener on your Roy Green Show, and a private blogger at “the International Journal of Inactivism” (http://frankbi.wordpress.com/). I refer to the debate on climate change between Richard Littlemore and Christopher Monckton which you hosted last Sunday, and your opening response to the debate this Saturday.

I also take issue with the manner of your “refereeing” of last week’s debate, in which you repeatedly questioned Littlemore’s points, while uncritically accepting Viscount Monckton’s claims. While I have no problem with reasoned queries on Littlemore’s words, I would have thought that true skepticism means to question claims made by _both_ sides of a debate!

Next, I must disagree with the claim that “The debate can never be over, because if the debate is over, then knowledge ends.” If this is true, then since Galileo’s heliocentrism and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity (which, incidentally, is “just a theory”) are no longer faced with any significant reasoned debate, it therefore means these theories signify the “end” of knowledge, which is a bad thing?

(In addition, assessing the state of “knowledge” by the mere presence of dissenters (mindless or not) will be a tacit admission that science _is_ determined by consensus. Which is absurd.)

Finally, by this e-mail I would like to provide an exception to your claim that “100% of e-mails disagreed with the IPCC” — I hope you will acknowledge and address this on your next show.

Thank you for your attention, and I eagerly await your response on the show.

Update 2008-08-24: Green has replied!

Hello Frank,
Thank you for your note. Cheers,
Roy

Another update 2008-08-24: Well, Green’s decided to talk about other things — at least for the first hour of today’s show. The ‘debate’ isn’t over except when it is!

  1. You do realise that 630CHED (the radio station Green works for) is owned by the same guy who runs Suncor Energy, the outfit who have the largest stake in the Athabasca Tar Sands?

  3. From what I remember, the worst part of that debate was Monkton starting out with Desmogs financing and associations rhetoric. It ruined the debate before it got started. Bringing Desmog into it was a dumb idea too. Desmog is about money and motivations of skeptics – not science. This thing was doomed before it got started.
