Climatati economics awareness week

cite as: F. Bi. 2008. Climatati economics awareness week. Intl. J. Inact., 1:92–93

About a week ago I saw a blog post on Only In It For The Gold which quoted a Dot Earth commenter, Dean, saying the following:

My understanding of economics is quite complete, thank you, as is my understanding of the power of freedom, and the proven consequences of totalitarianism.

What is most disturbing is that AGW [the anthropogenic global warming theory]’s supporters understanding of economics is so weak, that they don’t recognize government force and intervention when it’s staring them in the face. […]

I replied,

The word “economics” here is just a code for conlibertarian doctrine. […]

and didn’t think further about Dean’s words.

That is, not until today — the eve of US Independence Day — when my trusty anonymous source sent me yet more evidence of that secret worldwide cabal of power-hungry climate scientists, the Climatati! The picture shown here comes from what seems to be a secret manual for the highest echelon of the Climatati, written around the 18th century, and this particular section deals with various ‘heresies’ against the Church of Climatology. One of these is the ‘heresy’ that

My understanding of economics is quite complete

which, as you can see, the scribe has specially written down in English!

(But there’s more. The passage shown above also makes a reference to the Internets Tubes. Hmm, now that will explain why Al Gore invented the Internet — it was part of the Climatati’s grand plan all along! Connect the dots, my friends, connect the dots.)

By the way… in Soviet Russia, economics has a quite complete understanding of You.

Update 2008-07-05: Dean’s brilliant quote now graces the title page of Only In It :

My understanding of economics is quite complete, thank you.

– some guy on the internet

Another update 2008-07-05: At Crooked Timber I write,

I hereby nominate the phrase “My Understanding Of Economics Is Quite Complete” for the illustrious title of The Next Big Internet Meme™.

Bruce Baugh replies,

Bi: Wow. He is aware of all economics traditions. All our econ are belong to him.

Off to bed.

  3. I just stumbled across your site through a google search to find out if anyone else was getting annoyed with the bizarre global-warming articles The Register keep bringing out.

Anyway, brilliant blog you have here – I’ve added you to the blog-roll at The Lay Scientist. Climatati is such a brilliant term for the global climate science conspiracy, lol. It astounds me how many “normal” people genuinely seem to think that an entire branch of science is dedicated to an international effort to do… er, to raise… implement… something…

Actually I work for the British Antarctic Survey, and I’ve been intending to do some blogging on our climate science in the near future, just to prove that it’s not just a NASA conspiracy as El Reg appear to think…

Anyway, keep up the good work

  4. Martin:

Apparently El Reg is now also throwing out conspiracy theories regarding the software world. Not that I read the magazine much these days anyway…

Maybe they should get around to doing an article on the Bavarian Climatati starting from its founding in the depths of the Little Ice Age, or something. 🙂

    Also, thanks!
